Concussions are rampant in sports today and are one of their biggest issues. Almost every sport that is played has issues with concussions. The highest risk of this injury involves athletes from high speed contact sports, like football and hockey. Their body parts are absorbing tremendous amounts of force since they are constantly experiencing contact at unnatural speeds. They are seen even in traditionally low contact sports too though. An entire year of Justin Morneau’s career was lost when he slid into second base last year and was concussed.
There aren’t many injuries more serious than concussions. It results from the brain being rattled around inside of someone’s skull. A loss of consciousness is usually associated with the initial collision that causes the injury. After the fact a concussion can have even more serious effects. The feeling of being stuck in a fog is often the way those who suffer from concussions describe it. They cannot do much more than lay in their home since any type of exertion is hard to tolerate. There is very little known about concussions even though it is such a big problem.
A tried and true way of lowering the risk of a concussion is by using a mouth guard during athletic activity. Shock Doctor is a company that makes many athletic items, but one of their best is their gel strapless mouth guard designed to prevent concussions. A mouth guard can help you emerge from an impact relatively unhurt instead of suffering a concussion during it. A breathing channel is also included in the mouth guard to help you breathe normally while playing.
